Arcbound Wanderer rulings

  • If this creature gets enough -1/-1 counters put on it to cause its toughness to be 0 or less (or the damage marked on it to be lethal), modular will put a number of +1/+1 counters on the target artifact creature equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on this creature before it left the battlefield.

  • This card has modular—sunburst, a combination of two keyword abilities. The sunburst ability sets the number for the modular ability. Basically, the number of +1/+1 counters the Wanderer gets as it enters is equal to the number of colors of mana used to pay its cost.

  • For the leaves-the-battlefield ability, the number of counters on Arcbound Wanderer at the time it left the battlefield is what's relevant; the number of colors of mana used to pay its cost doesn't matter anymore.

  • When the Wanderer leaves the battlefield, you may put the counters onto a single target artifact creature. You can't split them among two or more artifact creatures.

Arcbound Wanderer keyword rules

Modular Rule 702.43

Modular represents both a static ability and a triggered ability. “Modular N” means “This permanent enters with N +1/+1 counters on it” and “When this permanent is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may put a +1/+1 counter on target artifact creature for each +1/+1 counter on this permanent.”

If a creature has multiple instances of modular, each one works separately.

Sunburst Rule 702.44

Sunburst is a static ability that functions as an object is entering the battlefield. “Sunburst” means “If this object is entering as a creature, ignoring any type-changing effects that would affect it, it enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each color of mana spent to cast it. Otherwise, it enters with a charge counter on it for each color of mana spent to cast it.”

Sunburst adds counters only if the object with sunburst is entering the battlefield from the stack as a resolving spell and only if one or more colored mana was spent on its costs, including additional or alternative costs.

Sunburst can also be used to set a variable number for another ability. If the keyword is used in this way, it doesn’t matter whether the ability is on a creature spell or on a noncreature spell.

If an object has multiple instances of sunburst, each one works separately.
