Overclocked Electromancer rulings

  • To double Overclocked Electromancer's power, it gets +X/+0, where X is its power when its second ability resolves.

  • Excess damage has been dealt to a creature if the damage dealt to it is greater than lethal damage. Usually, this means damage greater than its toughness, although damage already marked on the creature is taken into account.

  • an energy counter is the energy symbol. It represents one energy counter.

  • Energy counters are a kind of counter that a player may have. They're not associated with any specific permanents.

  • Keep track of how many energy counters each player has. Potential ways to track this include writing theme down on paper or using dice, but any method that is clear and mutually agreeable is fine. (At higher levels of tournament play, dice may not be allowed for tracking counters that players have.)

  • If an effect says you get one or more an energy counter, you get that many energy counters. To pay one or more an energy counter, you lose that many energy counters. You can't pay more energy counters than you have. Any effects that interact with counters a player gets, has, or loses can interact with energy counters.

  • Energy counters aren't mana. They don't go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana "of any type" can't give you energy counters.

  • Some triggered abilities state that you "may pay" a certain amount of an energy counter. You can't pay that amount multiple times to multiply the effect. You simply choose whether or not to pay that amount of an energy counter as the ability resolves.

  • Some triggered abilities that state that you "may pay" a certain amount of an energy counter describe an effect that happens "If you do." In that case, no player may take actions to try to stop the ability's effect after you make your choice. If the payment is followed by the phrase "When you do," then you'll choose any targets for that reflexive triggered ability and put it on the stack before players can take actions.

  • If a spell or ability with one or more targets states that you "may pay" some amount of an energy counter, and each permanent that it targets has become an illegal target, the spell or ability won't resolve. You can't pay any an energy counter even if you want to.

  • Some spells and abilities that give you an energy counter may require targets. If each target chosen is an illegal target as that spell or ability tries to resolve, it won't resolve. You won't get any an energy counter.

Overclocked Electromancer keyword rules

Double Rule 701.9

Doubling a creature’s power and/or toughness creates a continuous effect. This effect modifies that creature’s power and/or toughness but doesn’t set those characteristics to a specific value. See rule .

To double a creature’s power, that creature gets +X/+0, where X is that creature’s power as the spell or ability that doubles its power resolves. Similarly, an effect that doubles a creature’s toughness gives it +0/+X, where X is that creature’s toughness. Doubling a creature’s power and toughness gives it +X/+Y, where X is its power and Y is its toughness.

If a creature’s power is less than 0 when it’s doubled, doubling that creature’s power instead means that the creature gets -X/-0, where X is the difference between 0 and its power. Similarly, if its toughness is less than 0 when doubled, it gets -0/-X. If one characteristic’s value is negative but the other isn’t when both are doubled, it gets -X/+Y or +X/-Y, as appropriate.

To double a player’s life total, the player gains or loses an amount of life such that their new life total is twice its current value.

To double the number of a kind of counters on a player or permanent, give that player or permanent as many of those counters as that player or permanent already has.

To double the amount of a type of mana in a player’s mana pool, that player adds an amount of mana of that type equal to the amount they already have.

To double an amount of damage a source would deal, that source instead deals twice that much damage. This is a replacement effect.
