How the legend rule works

If you control two legendary permanents with the same name, you choose one to keep and the rest go to the graveyard. It is checked automatically, and it only ever looks at permanents controlled by the same player.

The rule compares full card names — not characters, not creature types — which is where nearly all of the confusion comes from.

The short answer

  • Only applies to legendary permanents you control with identical names
  • You choose which one to keep; the others go to their owners’ graveyards
  • It compares full card names, not the character or the creature type
  • Two different players can each control one copy without any problem
  • It is a state-based action, so it happens automatically
  • The cards that go are put into the graveyard, not sacrificed

What the rule actually says

The wording is short and worth reading directly, because every detail in it matters: it is about permanents, about the same controller, about identical names, and the survivor is chosen by that controller.

If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are controlled by the same player, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “legend rule.”
Comprehensive Rules 704.5j

It compares names, not characters

Two cards depicting the same character are not the same card. Jace Beleren and Jace, the Mind Sculptor share a character and a planeswalker type, but their names differ, so you can control both.

The reverse is also true: any two copies of the exact same card conflict, including different printings and different art of that card, because the name is identical.

  • Same name → conflict, whatever the printing or artwork
  • Different names → no conflict, even for the same character
  • Non-legendary copies of a legendary card do not conflict at all
  • Legendary creatures, planeswalkers, artifacts, lands and enchantments all use the same rule

Only your own permanents

The rule is scoped to one player. If you and an opponent each control a copy of the same legendary creature, nothing happens — both stay on the battlefield.

It becomes relevant the moment control changes. Taking control of an opponent’s copy of a legend you already control means you then control two, and you immediately choose one to keep.

It happens automatically

The legend rule is a state-based action, so it is checked whenever a player would receive priority, and it resolves without using the stack and without anyone needing to respond.

The losing permanents are put into the graveyard rather than sacrificed or destroyed, which matters for cards that care about how a permanent left the battlefield, and for permanents that cannot be destroyed.

Frequently asked questions

Can two players each control the same legendary creature?

Yes. The legend rule only looks at permanents controlled by the same player, so one copy each is fine.

Does the legend rule apply to cards in hand or graveyard?

No. It only applies to permanents on the battlefield. You can hold as many copies as you like in hand or graveyard.

Can I control two planeswalkers of the same character?

Yes, provided the card names differ. Planeswalkers use the legend rule like everything else, and the old planeswalker uniqueness rule based on planeswalker type no longer exists.

Are the extra legends destroyed or sacrificed?

Neither. They are put into their owners’ graveyards directly, which is why indestructible does not save them and why “when this is sacrificed” abilities do not trigger.

Do I choose which legendary permanent to keep?

Yes. The player controlling them chooses which one stays, and it does not have to be the one that arrived first.
