The Lunar Whale rulings

  • The Lunar Whale lets you look at the top card of your library whenever you want (with one restriction—see below), even if you don't have priority. This action doesn't use the stack. Knowing what that card is becomes part of the information you have access to, just like you can look at the cards in your hand.

  • If the top card of your library changes while you're casting a spell, playing a land, or activating an ability, you can't look at the new top card until you finish doing so. This means that if you cast the top card of your library, you can't look at the next one until you're done paying for that spell.

  • The top card of your library isn't in your hand, so you can't cycle it, discard it, or activate any of its abilities that could be activated from your hand.

  • You must follow all normal timing rules for spells cast and lands played using the third ability and must pay all costs for spells cast this way. To cast a spell this way, you may choose to pay any alternative costs or optional additional costs the spell may have (such as a kicker cost). You must pay any mandatory additional costs.

The Lunar Whale keyword rules

Flying Rule 702.9

Flying is an evasion ability.

A creature with flying can’t be blocked except by creatures with flying and/or reach. A creature with flying can block a creature with or without flying. (See rule , “Declare Blockers Step,” and rule , “Reach.”)

Multiple instances of flying on the same creature are redundant.

Crew Rule 702.122

Crew is an activated ability of Vehicle cards. “Crew N” means “Tap any number of other untapped creatures you control with total power N or greater: This permanent becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.”

A creature “crews a Vehicle” when it’s tapped to pay the cost to activate a Vehicle’s crew ability.

If an effect states that a creature “can’t crew Vehicles,” that creature can’t be tapped to pay the crew cost of a Vehicle.

Some Vehicles have abilities that trigger when they become crewed. “Whenever [this Vehicle] becomes crewed” means “Whenever a crew ability of [this Vehicle] resolves.” If that ability has an intervening “if” clause that refers to information about the creatures that crewed it, it means only creatures that were tapped to pay the cost of the crew ability that caused it to trigger.
