Collective Inferno rulings

  • If a creature you control has a mana ability with tap this permanent in the cost, activating that ability while casting a spell with convoke will result in the creature being tapped before you pay the spell's costs. You won't be able to tap it again for convoke. Similarly, if you sacrifice a creature to activate a mana ability while casting a spell with convoke, that creature won't be on the battlefield when you pay the spell's costs, so you won't be able to tap it for convoke.

  • If another effect (or effects) modifies how much damage a source you control of the chosen type would deal (for example, by preventing some of that damage), the player being dealt damage or the controller of the permanent being dealt damage chooses the order in which any such effects, including the effect of Collective Inferno's last ability, apply. If all of the damage is prevented before the effect of Collective Inferno's last ability would apply, its effect no longer applies.

  • Tapping an untapped creature that's attacking or blocking to convoke a spell won't cause that creature to stop attacking or blocking.

  • The damage is dealt by the same source as the original source of damage. The doubled damage isn't dealt by Collective Inferno unless (in a very unusual case) it was the original source of damage.

  • If damage dealt is being divided or assigned among multiple permanents or players, that damage is divided or assigned before any effects modify how much damage would be dealt. For example, say you control Collective Inferno and you attack an opponent with a 5/5 creature of the chosen type with trample and haste. If it's blocked by a 2/2 creature, you can assign 2 damage to the blocker and 3 damage to the defending player. Those amounts are then doubled to 4 and 6, respectively.

  • You can tap any untapped creature you control to convoke a spell, even one you haven't controlled continuously since the beginning of your most recent turn.

  • When calculating a spell's total cost, include any alternative costs, additional costs, or anything else that increases or reduces the cost to cast the spell. Convoke applies after the total cost is calculated. Convoke doesn't change a spell's mana cost or mana value.

Collective Inferno keyword rules

Double Rule 701.9

Doubling a creature’s power and/or toughness creates a continuous effect. This effect modifies that creature’s power and/or toughness but doesn’t set those characteristics to a specific value. See rule .

To double a creature’s power, that creature gets +X/+0, where X is that creature’s power as the spell or ability that doubles its power resolves. Similarly, an effect that doubles a creature’s toughness gives it +0/+X, where X is that creature’s toughness. Doubling a creature’s power and toughness gives it +X/+Y, where X is its power and Y is its toughness.

If a creature’s power is less than 0 when it’s doubled, doubling that creature’s power instead means that the creature gets -X/-0, where X is the difference between 0 and its power. Similarly, if its toughness is less than 0 when doubled, it gets -0/-X. If one characteristic’s value is negative but the other isn’t when both are doubled, it gets -X/+Y or +X/-Y, as appropriate.

To double a player’s life total, the player gains or loses an amount of life such that their new life total is twice its current value.

To double the number of a kind of counters on a player or permanent, give that player or permanent as many of those counters as that player or permanent already has.

To double the amount of a type of mana in a player’s mana pool, that player adds an amount of mana of that type equal to the amount they already have.

To double an amount of damage a source would deal, that source instead deals twice that much damage. This is a replacement effect.

Convoke Rule 702.51

Convoke is a static ability that functions while the spell with convoke is on the stack. “Convoke” means “For each colored mana in this spell’s total cost, you may tap an untapped creature of that color you control rather than pay that mana. For each generic mana in this spell’s total cost, you may tap an untapped creature you control rather than pay that mana.”

The convoke ability isn’t an additional or alternative cost and applies only after the total cost of the spell with convoke is determined.

A creature tapped to pay for mana in a spell’s total cost this way is said to have “convoked” that spell.

Multiple instances of convoke on the same spell are redundant.
