Blue Mage's Cane rulings

  • If you cast a spell by paying three generic mana rather than paying its mana cost, you can't choose to cast it for any other alternative cost. You can, however, pay additional costs. If the spell has any mandatory additional costs, those must be paid to cast the card.

  • You may pay the Equipment's equip cost as normal to move it from the Hero token to another creature you control.

  • If the Hero token is destroyed, the Equipment stays on the battlefield.

  • The Hero token enters as a 1/1 creature, then the Equipment becomes attached to it. Abilities that trigger when a creature enters the battlefield see that a 1/1 creature entered the battlefield.

  • If you don't want to cast the copy, you can choose not to; the copy ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are performed.

  • If the job select ability causes two Hero tokens to be created (due to an effect such as that of Doubling Season), the Equipment becomes attached to only one of them.

  • If the spell has X generic mana in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it by paying three generic mana rather than paying its mana cost.

  • You cast the copy while the ability is resolving and still on the stack. You can't wait to cast it later in the turn.

Blue Mage's Cane keyword rules

Equip Rule 702.6

Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. “Equip [cost]” means “[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate only as a sorcery.”

For more information about Equipment, see rule , “Artifacts.”

Equip abilities may further restrict what creatures may be chosen as legal targets. Such restrictions usually appear in the form “Equip [quality]” or “Equip [quality] creature.” These equip abilities may legally target only a creature that’s controlled by the player activating the ability and that has the chosen quality. Additional restrictions for an equip ability don’t restrict what the Equipment may be attached to.

If a permanent has multiple equip abilities, any of its equip abilities may be activated.

“Equip planeswalker” is a variant of the equip ability. “Equip planeswalker [cost]” means “[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target planeswalker you control as though that planeswalker were a creature. Activate only as a sorcery.”
